This has to be my favourite shot from my Farne Island trip, a Shag. These birds also nest on the Farne Islands and it is possible to get inches away from them in some places. Their feathers shimmer dark green in the sunlight and I love those green eyes - first time I've ever noticed their eyes! The mothers on their nest were happy to sit and have their photo taken, even those with newly hatched chicks which I was also able to see. The males meanwhile were always on the look-out for gifts to take to their partner. One gift-seeking male seemed delighted when a kittiwake feather came in his direction, grabbing the feather and proudly strutting away with it to present to his mate who added it to her nest.

"Needing people yet being afraid of them is wearing me out. I struggle with the paradox all the time and can't resolve it."
They sound like interesting birds, indeed! Such a brilliant emerald eye, too...they remind me of cormorants. I wonder if they are related? :?

Yup they're close relatives of cormrants, very similar only shags are much smaller and lack the white in the breeding season. Shags also have a crest that cormrants lack. Only saw glimpses of cormrants this time and no nests close by unlike last year - maybe they lay their eggs a bit later in the season because last year it was July when I visited the islands.

Definately productive trip, hoping to go back in July when the most of the chicks have hatched.
